Joe Spellman, illustrator of Hubert & the Magic Glasses, takes us on a studio tour
August 22nd, 2012Joe Spellman is a full time artist and children's book illustrator. His latest New Frontier book, Hubert & the Magic Glasses, is part of our Little Rockets series.
Sometimes you just don’t want to be disturbed when the creative juices are flowing. This sign was a birthday present from my wife – it either invites ‘Welcome’ or no explanation needed, ‘Go Away’ – it more usually remains on the later!
A water feature statue outside the main studio entry allows for the gentle sound of trickling water – creating a very soothing and relaxing atmosphere.
It is most important to me to have peace and quiet around the studio, which we are lucky to have. The main entry looks out onto an area of the garden filled with fruit trees.
My studio was originally a 12 x 6 metre shed which has been partitioned off to form a 9x 6 metre area. The studio has been lined and the acoustic tiled ceiling has been vaulted, giving the area a much larger and more open feeling. The concrete floor has been covered in sea grass matting, giving the area a very natural feel.
To accommodate my many paintings and for display purposes, we invested in a wall hanging system along with strip spot lights which can be positioned to highlight the various changing artworks.
I am very happy with the studio that has been created, it has a very tranquil feel.
I have various areas to work in – drawing board, desk, numerous easels, bookshelves, benches and, of course, some easy chairs.
Very busy working area.
Separate to my studio, I have an office in the main house where I keep my art library, computer and a drawing board which overlooks the swimming pool. A cozy area for the cooler months and suitable for smaller projects such as book illustrations.

This is very interesting as I have two watercolors by you and would very much like to discuss them with you.

I am intrigued by this! Are you the Joseph Lee Spellman that painted a picture called Cricket at Sydney harbou?
If so, I have two watercolours by you featuring North Queensland houses, which I would very much like to discuss with you.
